After a tumultuous period for the Scream franchise, there’s finally a ray of positivity. Neve Campbell, who previously declined to reprise her iconic role as Sidney Prescott due to a low pay offer, took to social media to announce her return for the seventh installment. Adding to the excitement, longtime franchise producer and original writer Kevin Williamson is set to make his directorial debut.
While the seventh film remains untitled, it has faced its share of challenges. Following the releases of Scream in 2022 and Scream VI last year, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett moved on to other projects, with their vampire film Abigail scheduled for release next month. Additionally, star Melissa Barrera was let go after voicing opinions on the Israel-Gaza conflict, while Jenna Ortega’s departure was attributed to scheduling conflicts.
Christopher Landon, initially attached as the director, also departed, citing difficulties with the project. Campbell’s return is undoubtedly a morale booster, and with Williamson at the helm, the film is in capable hands.
In her statement, Campbell expressed her excitement, stating, “I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled!!!” She continued, “While I’ve been so incredibly lucky to make these films with both the master of horror Wes Craven and the wonderfully talented Matt and Tyler team, I’ve dreamt for many years of how amazing it would be to make one of these movies with Kevin Williamson at the helm. And now it’s happening, Kevin Williamson is going to direct Scream 7! This was his baby and it’s his brilliant mind that dreamt up this world.”
