by Barbara

Locally-produced horror-drama “Exhuma” continues its reign atop the South Korean cinema box office for the fifth consecutive weekend, solidifying its status as a blockbuster.

With its unparalleled dominance, “Exhuma” maintains a comfortable lead over holdover “Dune 2” and a couple of new releases. Surpassing the 10 million ticket sales milestone, it reaffirms its blockbuster status in Korea, a significant achievement given the country’s population of approximately 50 million.

Over the latest weekend, “Exhuma” sold 618,000 tickets, generating $4.56 million in gross revenue and capturing a remarkable 56% market share, as reported by Kobis, the database operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). The film’s cumulative earnings now stand at an impressive $73.4 million from 10.2 million admissions.

While achieving the 10 million ticket sales milestone has been a rare feat since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, “Exhuma” stands as one of the few films to accomplish this, putting it in contention to surpass other recent blockbusters like “The Roundup: No Way Out.”

Meanwhile, “Dune 2” maintains its position in second place with a weekend gross of $1.1 million, bringing its total earnings to $15.3 million, marking it as one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Debuting in third place is the Japanese animation “Spy x Family Code: White,” which earned $794,000 over the weekend and $1.27 million in its first five days of release.

Other notable performances include “Wonka,” “Lee Seung Yoon Concert Docking: Liftoff,” and “Poor Things,” each contributing to the diverse landscape of the Korean box office.

With its consistent performance and enduring popularity, “Exhuma” continues to captivate audiences, cementing its status as a standout success in the South Korean film industry.
