Iman Vellani, known for her portrayal of Kamala Khan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently shared insights into how being cast as Ms. Marvel has deeply impacted her perspective as a Marvel fan.
Initially cast for the role of Kamala Khan in the MCU’s “Ms. Marvel,” Vellani reprised her character in the 2023 film “The Marvels.” Speaking at the Superhero Comic Con, Vellani discussed the profound effect of landing the role on her personal connection to Marvel.
“It’s just been the most validating thing for me coming out of it,” Vellani expressed. “I don’t value the glitz and the glamor of it. I used to stream all of the Marvel premieres on YouTube when it happened, I went deep! It’s so bizarre, but this whole thing has validated my fandom. All the comics I read when I was a kid, all the movies I watched frame by frame… I’m only started reading the comics to validate myself as a fan!”
Vellani, who also wrote for the comic book series “Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant,” emphasized the significance of contributing to the source material. “Isn’t it the most powerful thing in the world to contribute to the source material?” she reflected. “At some point in time, they’re gonna run out of comics to use, and then they’re gonna get to mine!”
Regarding her ongoing involvement as Ms. Marvel, Vellani confirmed her participation in the upcoming Marvel Zombies animated series, underscoring her continuing dedication to the role.
While future projects like sequels for “Ms. Marvel” or “The Marvels” have yet to be confirmed, fans can currently enjoy both series streaming on Disney+.
Vellani’s journey as Ms. Marvel reflects her deep-rooted passion for the Marvel universe, culminating in a transformative experience both professionally and personally.
