Bangkok’s Chinatown: The International Music Video Star

by Barbara

Before Thailand’s K-pop sensation Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban spotlighted it in her latest single, Bangkok’s Chinatown had already played a prominent role in four other international music videos. Lisa’s “Rockstar,” filmed in the neon-lit streets of Yaowarat, smashed records by garnering over one million YouTube views within half an hour of its release on June 28. As of now, the video has soared beyond 88 million views, turning Chinatown into a must-visit destination for fans eager to follow in Lisa’s footsteps.

Neon Nights and Viral Success

“Rockstar” was filmed over three consecutive nights from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m., transforming the bustling Yaowarat Road into a vibrant display of sharp dance moves and synchronized twerking. However, Lisa is not the first artist to showcase this iconic neighborhood.

A History of Global Musical Fame

Suga’s Atmospheric “Haegeum”

Suga, from the South Korean boy band BTS, selected a nearby spot on Charoen Krung Road for his solo hit “Haegeum.” Released under his solo moniker Agust D, the video, which portrays a gangster narrative set against the atmospheric backdrop of Chinatown’s shophouses, has amassed 77 million views on YouTube since its launch on April 21, 2023.

Aespa’s Fiery “Spicy”

South Korean girl group Aespa also added Yaowarat’s charm to their music video for “Spicy.” Although Chinatown appears briefly at three minutes and nine seconds into the video, its inclusion helped the video reach 146 million views since its release on May 8, 2023.

Troye Sivan’s Steamy “Got Me Started”

Australian singer-actor Troye Sivan’s video for “Got Me Started” offers a steamy tour of Bangkok nightlife, including a massage spa, before culminating in Yaowarat. The video’s blend of neon streets, bare flesh, and dirty dancing has attracted 3.6 million viewers since its YouTube debut on September 20, 2022.

Oh Wonder’s Nighttime Adventure in “How It Goes”

English alt-pop duo Oh Wonder, composed of Anthony and Josephine Vander West, provide a different perspective on Yaowarat in their video “How It Goes.” The duo takes a nighttime tuk-tuk tour of the area, culminating in a memorable, albeit ill-advised, decision to jump off next to the iconic giant swing. Despite the risky move, the video has garnered 655,970 views since its release on March 10, 2020.

Conclusion

Bangkok’s Chinatown continues to be a favorite filming location for international artists, thanks to its vibrant atmosphere and unique charm. With each new music video, Yaowarat’s neon-slicked streets gain more fame, attracting fans and visitors from around the globe.
