Marvel Redeems “One More Day” with Spider-Man’s New ‘Deal with the Devil’

by Barbara

In a bold move that could rewrite Spider-Man’s controversial history, Marvel Comics is revisiting the infamous storyline “One More Day” in an attempt to redeem it. Originally, “One More Day” saw Peter Parker, desperate to save Aunt May and restore his secret identity, striking a deal with Mephisto that erased his marriage to Mary Jane Watson and any memory of their unborn daughter.

Now, in a preview for Spider-Boy #9 by Dan Slott, Nathan Stockman, and Paco Medina, Peter Parker finds himself once again facing a Faustian bargain. Standing in a solemn cemetery, Spider-Man contemplates the unusual circumstances surrounding Spider-Boy’s existence, a character who was abruptly erased from Earth-616’s history. Bailey Briggs, also known as Spider-Boy, seeks validation of his place in Spider-Man’s world, despite being removed from it.

The preview hints at a pivotal interaction between Spider-Man and Madame Web, shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Madame Web offers a way for Spider-Boy to be remembered, but warns of a steep price. Undeterred, Spider-Man decides to proceed, solidifying the deal with a handshake, despite the ominous implications.

This storyline marks a significant departure from “One More Day,” where Peter Parker’s motivations were widely criticized for their perceived selfishness and the unnecessary sacrifice of his personal life. Unlike the original controversial deal, Spider-Man’s new pact is driven by a selfless desire to support Spider-Boy and reaffirm his role as mentor and protector. This narrative shift promises to explore deeper themes of redemption and sacrifice, potentially reshaping Spider-Man’s legacy in a more positive light.
