Focus Features has unveiled the first official trailer for “Conclave,” a forthcoming papacy thriller helmed by German filmmaker Edward Berger, known for his Oscar-nominated work “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Set to potentially debut at the prestigious Venice and Telluride Film Festivals this autumn, the film promises a gripping exploration of one of the Catholic Church’s most secretive rituals.
Based on Robert Harris’ novel, “Conclave” delves into the clandestine election of a new Pope following the sudden death of a beloved pontiff. Inside the confines of the Sistine Chapel, 118 cardinals from diverse corners of the globe convene to wield their influence and cast their votes, revealing their vulnerabilities to the temptations of power and the pitfalls of human ambition.
At the heart of the narrative is Cardinal Lawrence, portrayed by Ralph Fiennes, who is thrust into the midst of a labyrinthine conspiracy that threatens to destabilize the Church’s core. Alongside Fiennes, the film features a stellar ensemble including Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, promising a riveting portrayal of ambition, intrigue, and ethical dilemmas within the Vatican walls.
Directed by Edward Berger and adapted for the screen by Peter Straughan, “Conclave” is produced by a team comprising Alice Dawson, Robert Harris, Juliette Howell, Michael Jackman, and Tessa Ross. The film is slated for a selective U.S. theatrical release beginning November 1st, 2024, marking a highly anticipated addition to this year’s cinematic lineup.
With its gripping storyline and powerhouse cast, “Conclave” is poised to captivate audiences with its exploration of faith, politics, and the perils of unchecked influence within one of the world’s oldest institutions. As anticipation builds for its festival premieres and subsequent release, Berger’s latest offering promises to be a compelling cinematic experience this fall.
