Mattel has announced a new addition to its Barbie doll lineup with the launch of Glinda and Elphaba dolls, inspired by the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway hit “Wicked,” set for release on Thanksgiving Day.
The announcement came via a collaborative Instagram post from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who star in the film. The actresses, dressed as their respective characters, showcased the new dolls. Glinda is featured in a pink gown with puffy sleeves, while Elphaba is dressed in a green and black ruffled dress, complemented by boots and a witch hat.
Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, expressed her excitement, stating, “What a dream come true to be realized as Elphaba and Glinda in the form of sweet little dolls. Little Cynthia and little Ari are pleased,” reflecting her enthusiasm for the release.
While the dolls are not yet available, Mattel hinted at further developments in the comments of the Instagram post, suggesting that more details will follow.
Fans of the Broadway musical have expressed their excitement online. One user commented, “I’m crying, I NEED them,” while another wrote, “Everybody get in, we’re healing our inner child with Wicked dolls.” A third fan added, “The songs playing from the dolls!! Obsessed!!!”
Ariana Grande, who has long dreamed of portraying Glinda, discussed the role’s personal significance in an interview on the “Zach Sang Show” earlier this year. She described how playing Glinda rekindled her love for music and helped her address personal challenges. “I think I learned so much from Glinda and through Glinda. I kinda healed a lot of parts of myself alongside her, and it actually helped me heal a lot of my own personal weird stuff,” Grande said.
For Cynthia Erivo, the role of Elphaba represents a significant career milestone. Erivo described it as “the role of a lifetime,” underscoring her excitement about the opportunity.
