The 36th Macao International Music Festival (MIMF) is set to commence on 4 October with a performance of Puccini’s acclaimed opera Tosca at the Macao Cultural Centre’s Grand Auditorium.
The festival will feature the renowned Mariinsky Theatre of Russia, under the baton of the eminent conductor Valery Gergiev, who also serves as the general director of Moscow’s prestigious Bolshoi Theatre. The opera Tosca, known for its intense themes of passion and jealousy, will mark the festival’s opening.
The festival, which runs through 4 November, will conclude with a special performance by celebrated Portuguese Fado artist Mariza, accompanied by the Macao Chinese Orchestra and conducted by Tsung Yeh, according to a statement from the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC).
Throughout the month-long event, Macao will host an array of global musical talents, presenting 12 diverse programs. In addition to traditional Western classical music, this year’s festival will feature unique performances utilizing ethnic instruments at the Dom Pedro V Theatre. Highlights include Iranian kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor, Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man, and Grammy-winning tabla player Sandeep Das from India.
The festival will also showcase notable American jazz musicians, including Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award-winner Herbie Hancock, who has previously performed in Macao, and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.
Tickets for the 36th Macao International Music Festival will be available through the Macau Ticketing Network starting 18 August. An early bird discount will be offered until 25 August, as per the IC.
