Matthew Lillard, known for his roles in both the Scooby-Doo and Five Nights at Freddy’s franchises, has put an end to speculation about a crossover between the two popular series. Despite a playful social media post earlier this year that fueled fan excitement, Lillard has confirmed that a crossover is not in the works.
In May, Lillard celebrated the announcement of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 with an Instagram post featuring him in his Springtrap costume from the Five Nights at Freddy’s series, alongside a statue of Scooby-Doo. The post garnered nearly two million likes and sparked a flurry of speculation among fans. During a recent interview with JayBee & Milly on YouTube, Lillard was asked about the possibility of a crossover between the two franchises.
“No, those two will never meet,” Lillard stated firmly. “Those two are not a match-up anyone wants or needs. The opportunity to blend the costumes was too great to pass up, and it generated a lot of social media buzz. It was a fun moment for fans of both series.”
Lillard, who plays the antagonist William Afton in Five Nights at Freddy’s, is contracted for a three-picture deal with the franchise. The first film, released in 2023 and directed by Emma Tammi, was a significant commercial success, earning nearly $300 million against a $20 million budget. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film’s financial success has prompted Blumhouse Productions to proceed with the sequel.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s film series is based on the popular video game franchise created by Scott Cawthon, with the script co-written by Cawthon, Seth Cuddeback, and director Emma Tammi. The films follow a security guard working the night shift at a haunted pizzeria inhabited by animatronic creatures. The cast includes Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Mary Stuart Masterson.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is scheduled for release on December 5, 2025.
