Tran Tung Anh, a distinguished vocalist known for his unique non-binary singing style, has clinched the top prize in the opera singing category at the Qingyin Award – Youth Music Festival 2024. The prestigious event, organized by the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music in Hangzhou, saw participation from approximately 600 contestants worldwide, with sponsorship from various Chinese and international music institutions.
Tran Tung Anh was among nine contestants representing Vietnam. His remarkable performance in the “Youth Opera” category earned him the champion title. Anh’s competition entry featured a medley of renowned Vietnamese classical and chamber music pieces, including “Xuan Chien Khu” (Spring in the Resistance Zone), “Co Gai Vot Chong” (The Girl Who Sharpens Spikes), “Canh Chim Bao Tin Vui” (The Birds that Bring Good News), “Nguoi Lai Do Tren Song Po Ko” (The Ferryman on the Po Ko River), and “Truong Ca Song Lo” (The Epic of the Lo River).
Anh meticulously arranged and orchestrated this collection to complement his distinctive genderless vocal style. Throughout the competition, the 29-year-old singer demonstrated his versatility by showcasing both his genderless voice and his authentic male voice.
