Deadpool & Wolverine Breaks Box Office Records Amid Marvel and Easter Eggs

by Barbara

In just two weekends, the much-anticipated film Deadpool & Wolverine has made a remarkable impact at the box office, raking in nearly $825 million. Analysts predict the film will soon surpass the $1 billion mark, with some even speculating it could reach $2 billion during its theatrical run, thanks to its engaging storyline and the inclusion of Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Despite its success, Deadpool & Wolverine is not without its flaws. The film contains several plot holes that the Marvel franchise may need to address in future installments.

One intriguing element of the film is Deadpool’s connection to Earth-616, which presents both logical and perplexing aspects for fans. A specific Easter egg related to Spider-Man has already sparked discussion, though it differs from what was previewed in trailers and promotional materials.

In a memorable scene, Deadpool and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) find themselves driving in the Void, where one character becomes increasingly exasperated with the other. At one point, Deadpool mimics Spider-Man’s web-slinging gestures and sounds, much to Wolverine’s annoyance, suggesting that both characters are aware of Spider-Man’s existence.

Fans might anticipate a cameo from a Spider-Man variant in the Void, but this does not materialize, nor is it the confusing Easter egg mentioned earlier. The first notable Spider-Man Easter egg occurs early in the film when Wade Wilson travels to Earth-616 to apply for a position with the Avengers. In an emotional exchange with Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), Deadpool expresses his desire to join the team, prompting Happy to reflect on the Avengers’ role as symbols of hope.

As Happy speaks, the camera highlights various Avengers-related memorabilia in his office. Among these is a familiar photograph seen in Avengers: Endgame, which depicts Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) contemplating time travel to assist the Avengers in their Time Heist. Notably, Spider-Man (Tom Holland) plays a significant role in Tony’s motivation to undertake this plan, as Tony blames himself for losing Peter Parker during the battle on Titan.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, viewers only see half of the photograph in Happy’s office. The visible portion shows Tony Stark, while a toy Iron Man mask obscures the half featuring Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. This toy mask is reminiscent of one worn by a child in Iron Man 2, suggesting a possible connection to a young Peter Parker.

Some Marvel fans theorize that Peter Parker’s absence in the photo may be related to Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which caused the world to forget Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man. However, this theory does not align with the established timeline. The spell only affects events following No Way Home, which occurs in the summer after Endgame, making it impossible for the spell to retroactively alter past events.

Moreover, the decision to not fully reveal the photograph seems to stem from contractual limitations regarding Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man, which is currently under Sony’s jurisdiction. As per the existing Disney-Sony agreement, Spider-Man is expected to feature in another MCU project before Spider-Man 4, potentially in Daredevil. Consequently, Holland’s Spider-Man cannot be referenced in a Marvel film, even indirectly through a photograph.

As Deadpool & Wolverine continues its impressive box office run, fans eagerly await how the film’s connections to the larger Marvel universe will evolve in future projects.
