Connie Chiume, a prominent South African actress celebrated for her roles in various television shows and the Marvel film Black Panther, passed away at the age of 72, her family announced.
Chiume, who began her career as a trained teacher before transitioning into acting, made significant contributions to South African television with appearances in popular series such as Rhythm City, Zone 14, and the recent hit Gomora.
According to a brief statement from her family, she died on Tuesday afternoon at a Johannesburg hospital following a medical procedure.
“The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume,” the statement said, also requesting privacy during this challenging time.
Her son, Nongelo Chiume, confirmed to TV broadcaster Newzroom Afrika that she had been admitted for a medical procedure prior to her passing.
Chiume gained international recognition for her role as Zawavari in Marvel’s Black Panther in 2018, where she portrayed a member of the Wakandan Tribal Council. She reprised her role in the upcoming sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
In addition to her screen work, Chiume was praised for her role as Sarabi in Beyoncé’s Disney musical adaptation of The Lion King.
Throughout her career, Chiume received numerous accolades, including an NTVA Avanti Award and a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for her performances in various drama series.
Born in Welkom, Free State province, to a Malawian father and Zulu mother, Chiume initially trained as a nurse before pursuing her passion for acting.
Tributes poured in on social media following news of her passing, with fans and colleagues alike remembering her versatility and significant contributions to South African entertainment.
Connie Chiume is survived by her four children – two sons and two daughters.
