Marvel’s latest blockbuster, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing the $1 billion mark and securing its place as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. The film has garnered $1.086 billion (P62.1 billion) globally, overtaking the previous record-holder, 2019’s “Joker,” which earned $1.078 billion (P61.7 billion).
Both “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Joker” are the only R-rated movies to have reached this financial summit, with Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” being the only other film this year to exceed $1 billion. Notably, “Deadpool & Wolverine” achieved this milestone faster than “Joker,” despite the latter’s absence from the Chinese market.
Before “Joker,” the title of highest-grossing R-rated film belonged to the first “Deadpool,” released in 2016. Warner Bros. is poised to challenge Marvel’s new record with the upcoming release of “Joker: Folie à Deux” this October.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige expressed his gratitude, stating, “Thanks for making Marvel Studios’ first R-rated movie the biggest of all time. It’s fantastic to see that audiences are loving this movie as much as we all loved making it. All those conversations were worth it!”
In a playful nod to the film’s content, Marvel highlighted a scene where Ryan Reynolds’ character, Wade Wilson, comments on the producer’s refusal to allow references to cocaine.
The film features Wade Wilson, who, after being rejected from joining the Avengers, leads a mundane life until the Time Variance Authority reveals his newfound significance. His journey takes a dramatic turn when he and Wolverine, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, end up in a wasteland, where they must work together to save their respective universes.
