Francois van Coke, the frontman of the renowned South African rock band Fokofpolisiekar, recently shared insights into his unconventional career path and the unexpected milestones he has achieved. In a candid discussion, van Coke revealed that publishing his autobiography was among the many ventures he never anticipated undertaking.
“I never envisioned myself singing in a band, hosting a TV show, or owning a bar,” van Coke admitted. His rise to prominence as Fokofpolisiekar’s lead singer was a fortuitous twist of fate, he said, explaining that he initially joined the band out of necessity rather than aspiration. “I was the least skilled guitarist, and no one else was willing to take on the vocal role,” he recalled.
Despite the serendipitous nature of his career, van Coke expressed gratitude for the opportunities that have come his way. “Everything fell into place by chance, and I’m thankful for the experiences I’ve had,” he said.
Adapting to Change in the Music Industry
Turning to the current state of the music industry, van Coke observed that it has largely returned to pre-pandemic norms, with live performances and cross-country tours resuming. Reflecting on the impact of COVID-19, he noted that the pandemic necessitated a significant shift in how artists connect with their audiences.
“The pandemic forced us to adapt and find new ways to perform,” van Coke explained. “We began streaming shows, which, in some ways, was beneficial for us. Our established fan base sought out music during the lockdown, so the transition to virtual performances went relatively smoothly.”
Van Coke recently hosted “The Stories Behind the Tunes” at the Menlyn Barnyard Theatre, an experience that marked a departure from his usual performance style. “I don’t typically talk much during my shows, so it was a significant shift to share the stories behind the songs. Many of these narratives are also detailed in my autobiography, How I Remember It,” he said.
A Legacy of Reinvention
With a music career spanning over two decades, van Coke emphasized the importance of reinvention to remain relevant in the ever-evolving industry. “Maintaining that balance is crucial. We’re fortunate that our music resonates deeply with listeners, spanning across generations,” he noted. Van Coke has observed parents bringing their teenagers to his shows, highlighting a unique two-generation fan base.
“It’s incredible to see our music connecting with both parents and their children. It’s a tremendous honor, and I hope we can continue this legacy for future generations,” he added.
Throughout his career, van Coke has remained steadfast in his commitment to authenticity. “I choose not to use explicit language in my songs, as honesty in our music is paramount,” he concluded.
