On Monday, the trailer for Emilia Pérez was officially released by the film’s producers. The Spanish-language film, which combines elements of music, comedy, and crime, will be shown in select theaters starting in November, with a Netflix premiere scheduled for November 13.
The film stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz, with supporting roles played by Mark Ivanir and Edgar Ramirez. In Emilia Pérez, Saldaña portrays Rita, a disgruntled lawyer who is tasked with helping an escaped Mexican cartel leader undergo sex reassignment surgery. The surgery is a means to both evade law enforcement and affirm her gender identity.
Emilia Pérez made its debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2024, where it competed for the prestigious Palme d’Or. Although it did not secure the top prize, the film was honored with the Jury Prize, and its ensemble of female actors received the Best Actress award.
The film’s soundtrack includes original songs by Camille, with Clément Ducol composing the original score. Choreography for the dance sequences was created by Damien Jalet.
