Country music fans and fellow musicians are paying tribute to Derrick Mehaffey, the renowned Tyrone singer who passed away suddenly at the age of 78 on Monday morning. Mehaffey, a beloved figure in the Irish showband scene, is survived by his wife, Shirley, and his brother-in-law, Ralph.
Mehaffey was celebrated for his role as the lead singer of The Sounds, a popular band active during the 1960s and 1970s, and also performed with The Conquerors. His contributions to the genre earned him a special place in the hearts of many.
Country Music Radio NI expressed their condolences on Facebook, noting, “Derrick was a very popular entertainer with his band The Sounds during the Showband scene in Ireland during the 60s and 70s. He was affectionately known as Ireland’s Cliff Richard. Our thoughts are with his wife Shirley and all the family.”
Mike Denver, a contemporary of Mehaffey, shared his sorrow on social media: “Saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Derrick Mehaffey today. Derrick was lead singer with Willie (my Manager) and the Conquerors in the 70s. Met Derrick numerous times with Willie and in particular at Jamboree in the Park Fintona when I performed there. Deepest sympathy to Shirley. Rest in Peace Derrick.”
Omagh Today also paid tribute, stating, “I am absolutely shocked and devastated to hear of the passing of Derrick earlier today. Derrick was a kind, sincere, and humble gentleman. He was a gifted singer and musician and was way ahead of his time with his early recordings. In his TV and electronic shop, you were always greeted with respect and politeness. So saddened and shocked by this news.”
One admirer reflected on Mehaffey’s career, saying, “So sorry to learn of the passing of Derrick Mehaffey. Derrick invited me to be part of his amazing touring Country and Gospel show many years ago and it was a privilege to appear on numerous stages with this gentleman and his band. He was the consummate professional, impeccably dressed, and a stickler for punctuality. He had a presence on stage that captivated his audiences and a voice that was golden. He toured the world and recorded numerous albums. Thanks for the memories Derrick. Sending sympathy and love to Shirley and the family circle at this sad time.”
Mehaffey’s passing is a significant loss to the country music community, and his legacy continues to be honored by those who knew him and appreciated his work.
