New Thriller ‘Nightsleeper’ Takes High-Speed Drama to the Next Level

by Barbara

The BBC’s latest thriller, Nightsleeper, promises to elevate the high-stakes drama genre with a gripping new concept. Following in the footsteps of the acclaimed Bodyguard—known for its intense opening sequence involving a thwarted terrorist attack on a train—Nightsleeper amplifies the tension by confining its entire six-episode arc to a high-speed train.

Described as a blend of fast-paced action and intricate mystery, Nightsleeper unfolds as a high-speed thriller reminiscent of Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, but crafted with a modern BBC flair and without the presence of Steven Seagal.

The series centers on a train journey from Glasgow to London that spirals into chaos when it is ‘hackjacked’, sending it on a perilous and unpredictable path. The show combines heart-pounding action with a twisty detective narrative, set against the backdrop of a single, tension-filled night where trust is scarce and identities are elusive.

Joe Roag (played by Joe Cole), an off-duty police officer, and Abby Aysgarth (portrayed by Alexandra Roach), the acting technical director at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), are thrust into the spotlight as they work to uncover the perpetrators behind the hijacking. The two protagonists, who have yet to meet face-to-face, must navigate a web of intrigue and suspicion to determine whether they are facing a state-sponsored threat, a terrorist group, or organized crime. A shadowy figure known as the ‘Driver’ seems to stay one step ahead of their every move, adding another layer of complexity to their mission.

Nightsleeper is penned by Nick Leather and Laura Grace, the team behind The Control Room, with direction by Jamie Magnus Stone and John Hayes.

The complete series will be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer starting September 15th.
