In a notable development at the mainland China box office, “Alien: Romulus” has secured its third consecutive weekend win, earning RMB63.4 million ($8.9 million) from Friday to Sunday. This brings its total to RMB661 million ($93.1 million), surpassing its North American earnings of $88.8 million. This figure makes it the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film in China this year, trailing only behind “Godzilla x Kong.” The film’s success is particularly remarkable as it has achieved this feat in August, a month traditionally reserved for Chinese film promotions.
Conversely, Chinese-made films have struggled this summer, contributing to a downturn in the season’s overall performance. “Go for Broke,” a local crime action film, improved from fourth to second place with a modest 13% drop from the previous week, earning $6.2 million and reaching a total of $44.9 million. The summer’s top performer, “Successor,” returned to the top five, adding $3.7 million to its impressive $459 million total.
In other box office news, the crime drama “Untouchable” saw its second-weekend earnings fall to $3.7 million from $10.3 million. The Thai comedy “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” also made a notable entry into the top five, securing fifth place with $3.3 million, bringing its total to $10.7 million since its August 23 release.
The nationwide weekend box office grossed $40.8 million, marking a ten-week low and pushing the cumulative total to $4.70 billion, a 22% decline from the previous year. According to Maoyan, the summer season (June to August) saw a 44% drop year-on-year, with the box office for this period totaling RMB 11.64 billion. Despite this, the number of films released and those grossing over RMB 100 million reached a six-year high.
Maoyan also noted that while the summer featured a diverse range of domestic films across various genres, including comedy, drama, and sci-fi, imported films performed exceptionally well. Notably, “Alien: Romulus” outperformed its North American box office in China, highlighting a significant shift in market dynamics.
