Xie Shaoguang, a towering figure in local entertainment, is poised to re-enter the acting world after an extended hiatus. Known for his illustrious career and profound personal transformation, Shaoguang’s return marks a significant moment for fans and the industry alike.
In 2005, Shaoguang, now 62, left his thriving acting career—marked by five Best Actor awards and two Best Supporting Actor accolades—to pursue a different path. He embraced Buddhist monkhood, managed an animal sanctuary, and ran a vegetarian restaurant in Malaysia. During this period, he avoided social media and public appearances, choosing instead to lead a reclusive life.
His reemergence has sparked curiosity and excitement. However, it should be noted that Shaoguang does not currently have any confirmed acting projects. His recent announcement is more of a signal to the industry that he is open to new opportunities.
The catalyst for his return was a 2022 request from his former manager to mentor young actors. Shaoguang found joy in sharing his acting techniques, which emphasize understanding characters without moral judgment. This experience reignited his passion for acting.
“My ex-manager suggested that since I have such a passion for acting, I should consider returning,” Shaoguang said. “Acting has always been a part of me, and I’m open to finding the right role.”
His former manager, now leading Mediacorp’s The Celebrity Agency, highlighted that Shaoguang’s absence from the industry made it crucial to inform the public of his willingness to accept roles.
“I’m waiting for the right role to come along,” Shaoguang stated. “If I can bring depth to the character and contribute meaningfully, it will be a successful collaboration.”
Shaoguang’s return is also driven by the support and encouragement he has received from fans, who have repeatedly asked about his acting comeback. He now feels ready to answer their calls.
Reflecting on his departure, Shaoguang shared that his decision to leave acting stemmed from a need for spiritual renewal and personal well-being. The demanding schedule and intense roles had begun to impact his health and personal life. “The rigorous work was taking a toll, and I needed to step back to recharge,” he explained.
During his hiatus, Shaoguang dedicated himself to various causes, including managing an animal shelter and running a vegetarian restaurant. His Buddhist monastic period, which lasted two and a half years, was transformative, teaching him the importance of love and acceptance.
Now back in Singapore, Shaoguang feels the timing is right to return to acting. He expressed enthusiasm about working with both veteran and new actors, mentioning his interest in collaborating with emerging talents like Richie Koh.
“I’m excited to work with anyone, as I believe everyone has grown over the years,” Shaoguang said. “I’m particularly impressed with Richie Koh’s relaxed acting style.”
Shaoguang’s journey from character actor to a revered figure in the industry is a testament to his resilience and dedication. He began his career with minor roles but gradually earned recognition for his versatility and skill.
As he prepares for his return, Shaoguang remains humble and appreciative of his audience’s support. “An actor’s recognition is always due to the audience,” he noted. “I’m grateful for their continued support and patience. I hear their encouragement and am ready to embrace new roles.”
Shaoguang’s return promises to bring a fresh perspective to the local entertainment scene, blending his rich experience with a renewed passion for acting.
