Universal Pictures has unveiled the second full trailer for its highly anticipated film adaptation of the Broadway sensation Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu. The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the lead roles, bringing the iconic musical to the big screen.
The story centers on Elphaba, a green-skinned young woman who is destined to become the Wicked Witch of the West, a character first introduced in The Wizard of Oz. Erivo portrays Elphaba, while Grande plays Glinda, the Good Witch of the East. The trailer reveals new footage and highlights the complex dynamic between the two characters, hinting at the eventual rift in their friendship.
Notably, the film is presented as “Part 1” of a two-part story. The continuation of the narrative will be released in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked has been a beloved stage musical for over two decades, and its transition to film is highly anticipated. The movie will explore the story of Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship, which is tested following their encounter with the Wizard of Oz. The film portrays Glinda as a figure driven by popularity and privilege, while Elphaba remains steadfast in her authenticity, leading to unforeseen consequences.
The cast also includes Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, the headmistress of Shiz University; Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, a charming prince; and Tony nominee Ethan Slater as Boq, a Munchkin student. Marissa Bode makes her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister, and Jeff Goldblum appears as the Wizard of Oz.
Additional cast members include Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James as Pfannee and ShenShen, two of Glinda’s associates, and Tony nominee Keala Settle in a new role as Miss Coddle.
Fans of the musical will likely find this latest trailer compelling as the film aims to capture the essence of the stage show while introducing fresh elements for a new audience.
