Nestor Carbonell secured his first Emmy Award for Best Drama Guest Actor at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony held on Sunday night in downtown Los Angeles. The veteran actor, known for roles in “Lost,” “The Morning Show,” “Suddenly Susan,” and “Bates Motel,” had never previously been nominated for an Emmy. He was also honored with a Gold Derby TV Award in the same category recently.
Carbonell outperformed Paul Dano (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), Tracy Letts (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”), and John Turturro (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”). He was favored to win with 82/25 odds, according to Gold Derby predictions.
In a discussion with Gold Derby’s Tony Ruiz earlier this summer, Carbonell described his role as Vasco Rodrigues in FX’s period drama “Shōgun” as “a dream of a role,” noting his character’s bombastic and self-serving nature. The Emmy-winning episode submitted was titled “Anjin.”
The Creative Arts Emmys, which took place over two nights, covered animation, reality, variety, and nonfiction programming on September 7, and dramas, comedies, TV movies, and limited series on September 8. The main Primetime Emmys broadcast, hosted by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, will air live on ABC on September 15, featuring the remaining 25 awards.
