Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed album, Cowboy Carter, did not receive a nomination for the 58th Country Music Association (CMA) Awards, which were announced on Monday. This omission has drawn significant attention, given the album’s substantial cultural impact upon its release earlier this year.
The exclusion of Cowboy Carter from the list of nominees is particularly notable. The album’s lead single, “Texas Hold ‘Em,” not only topped various charts, including those for country music, but also contributed to the album’s widespread acclaim as a commercial and critical success.
Cowboy Carter is celebrated for its homage to Beyoncé’s Southern roots and its exploration of the African American contributions to country music. The album offers a robust narrative that challenges the traditional, predominantly white and male-centric view of country music that has often been perpetuated by Nashville’s gatekeepers. It navigates the genre’s evolution from African American spirituals and fiddle music to its early trailblazing female artists.
The CMA Awards ceremony is scheduled for November 20.
In stark contrast to Beyoncé’s absence, Morgan Wallen, a controversial figure in country music, led the nominations with seven, including the highly sought-after “Entertainer of the Year” award. Chris Stapleton and Cody Johnson followed with five nominations each, while Lainey Wilson and Post Malone, who has transitioned from rock to country, each received four nominations. Malone’s collaboration with Wallen on the single “I Had Some Help” has propelled him into the forefront of this year’s nominations.
Beyoncé, who has previously faced controversy at the CMAs—such as the backlash after her 2016 performance of “Daddy Lessons”—addressed the debate surrounding her country music endeavors in her track “Ameriican Requiem.” In the song, she reflects on criticisms of her authenticity in country music: “They used to say I spoke, ‘Too country’ / Then the rejection came, said I wasn’t, ‘Country enough’ / Said I wouldn’t saddle up, but if that ain’t country, tell me, what is?”
Cowboy Carter is noted for its innovative fusion of country with other genres including rap, dance, soul, funk, rock, and gospel, showcasing Beyoncé’s versatility and technical prowess.
