Melissa Barrera stars in “Your Monster,” a feature selected for the Sundance Film Festival and directed by Caroline Lindy. The film, based on Lindy’s 2020 short of the same name, showcases Barrera as Laura, an actress grappling with a breakup and subsequent rage that manifests into a literal monster boyfriend, played by Tommy Dewey.
The film’s official synopsis describes Laura, a soft-spoken actor, dealing with a painful breakup and an unexpected recovery period following surgery. As Laura’s life seems to unravel further, she discovers that her ex-boyfriend is staging a musical they developed together. Amidst these upheavals, a monster emerges, offering Laura a chance to explore her dreams and emotional wounds.
The IndieWire review praised the on-screen chemistry between Barrera and Dewey, noting that their dynamic helps make the fantastical relationship between Laura and the monster engaging. The film blends elements of romance, horror, and musical numbers, creating a unique narrative experience.
Barrera, known for her roles in both musicals like “In the Heights” and horror films, expressed her fascination with portraying complex characters. She values the opportunity to explore darker aspects of humanity and challenge audiences with characters that, while not always likable, are deeply relatable.
“Your Monster” is set to premiere in theaters on October 25.
