Shelley Duvall’s Final Film Set for October Release Following Her Passing

by Barbara

In early October, audiences will have the opportunity to witness the final film of the late Shelley Duvall, who passed away in July at the age of 75 due to complications from diabetes. Duvall’s last appearance is in the indie horror film The Forest Hills, with the trailer for the movie released on September 13.

Duvall, who had been absent from acting for over two decades—her last role being in Manna from Heaven (2002)—returns to the screen in this film. Directed by Scott Goldberg, The Forest Hills is set against the backdrop of the Catskill Mountains and delves into the psychological unraveling of Rico (Chiko Mendez), the character portrayed by Duvall. The plot revolves around Rico’s descent into madness, haunted by dark secrets and werewolf visions, while he navigates a strained relationship with his mother.

Goldberg expressed his enthusiasm about working with the Hollywood icon, stating, “Shelley’s a Hollywood legend. I’m thrilled she had the chance to showcase her enduring talent.” Duvall’s scenes were filmed remotely from her home in Texas, with direction provided via Zoom.

Duvall reflected on her return to acting, describing it as “great fun” and a welcome diversion from her previous struggles. “Acting again—it’s so much fun. It enriches your life,” she shared.

Prior to her death, Duvall told that her desire to return to acting was a significant motivator for her participation in the film. Despite her long hiatus from the industry, she expressed enthusiasm for the project and her role in it.

Duvall had retired from acting after Manna from Heaven and had been the subject of controversy in 2016 following an appearance on the Dr. Phil show, which was criticized for exploiting her mental health issues.

Goldberg paid tribute to Duvall after her passing, reflecting on her legacy. “Shelley leaves behind an incredible legacy and will be deeply missed. I am honored to have worked with her and grateful for her friendship and kindness.”

The Forest Hills is scheduled for a limited theatrical release starting October 4.
