FX’s “Shogun” emerged as the dominant force at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, securing three major accolades including best drama series, best actress for Anna Sawai, and best actor for Hiroyuki Sanada. Notably, Sawai and Sanada became the first Japanese actors to win Emmys.
Adapted from James Clavell’s 1976 novel, the FX series, which is the network’s most ambitious project to date, led with 25 nominations. It also made history at the Creative Arts Emmys, securing a record 14 awards. The new “Shogun” focuses on a Japanese perspective of the 17th-century power struggles, with Sanada portraying Lord Toranaga and Sawai as Toda Mariko.
The series, created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, has been praised for its authentic portrayal and has a 99 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Seasons 2 and 3 are already in development.
The original “Shogun” miniseries aired in 1980, featuring Richard Chamberlain and Toshirô Mifune, and was a significant cultural phenomenon.
Hiroyuki Sanada, known for roles in “The Last Samurai” and “John Wick: Chapter 4,” also served as a producer for the FX series. Anna Sawai, previously a J-pop star, has gained recognition with roles in “Pachinko” and “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.”
The supporting actor category saw competition between Japanese stars Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira, both from “Shogun.” Asano is known for his role in the Marvel Universe, while Hira is recognized for his part in “Snake Eyes” and the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World.”
