Zack Snyder has officially confirmed that a prequel TV series to his iconic film 300 is moving forward. This announcement comes as Snyder promotes his new Netflix anime series, Twilight of the Gods. Recently, Snyder provided an update on the much-anticipated project.
“We’re just getting ready to dive in and get to work on it,” Snyder said. “It’s super fun, I love the world. In our preliminary meetings, we’ve been exploring ideas like, ‘What if this happened or that happened?’ It’s exciting to see how rich the material is.”
The upcoming series is expected to delve into the story of the Spartans led by King Leonidas, exploring the events leading up to their legendary battle against Xerxes. The original 2006 film focused on the valiant 300 Spartan soldiers who fought bravely at the Battle of Thermopylae, ultimately sacrificing their lives while inflicting significant losses on the much larger Persian army.
Following the original film, 300: Rise of an Empire was released in 2014, serving as a prequel, interquel, and sequel. It depicted additional conflicts between the Spartans and Persians at the Battles of Artemisium and Salamis during the Greco-Persian Wars. The new series is likely to examine how King Leonidas, portrayed by Gerard Butler in the film, established his reputation as a formidable Spartan warrior and leader through pivotal battles.
Given the success of sword-and-sandal series such as Game of Thrones, Spartacus, and Vikings, the long-form narrative of 300 appears to fit well within the current television landscape. Snyder’s signature slow-motion, comic-style visuals would further distinguish the series, prompting curiosity about which actors might be recast to portray younger versions of characters like Leonidas, Gorgo (Lena Headey), Artemis (Vincent Regan), and Stelios (Michael Fassbender).
The series is currently in development, promising to expand upon the fantastical vision of Ancient Greece initially crafted by comic writer Frank Miller and artist Lynn Varley.
