Transformers One Launches with $39M Global Debut Amid Mixed Reception

by Barbara

Transformers One debuted with a global box office of $39 million, drawing $14 million from 50 international markets—representing only 40% of its potential overseas reach. This marks the first animated installment in the Transformers franchise in nearly 40 years.

Directed by Josh Cooley, the film’s domestic performance fell short of projections, with international earnings also lagging behind expectations. Major markets including Brazil, Italy, Korea, China, Germany, the UK, and France are yet to open, leading to questions about the film’s softer-than-anticipated overseas debut. The positive reception at a work-in-progress screening at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June generated high expectations, but current industry trends indicate a general softness in the marketplace, exacerbated by the back-to-school season. Industry insiders remain hopeful that audiences will discover the $75 million production in the weeks ahead.

In comparison to similar releases, Transformers One opened 3% lower than The LEGO Batman Movie and 16% below Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in the same markets.

Mexico led the international box office with $2.2 million, despite opening in fourth place. Australia ranked third with $1.5 million, benefiting from two upcoming weeks of school holidays. Japan contributed $820,000, with a national holiday imminent. Panama debuted in second place with $625,000 from just 132 locations, while Spain grossed $445,000, also landing in third. Notable first-place launches included the Philippines ($430,000), Ukraine ($135,000), and Turkey ($120,000). Additionally, Transformers One earned $3 million in IMAX screenings.

Overall, Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice continued to dominate the box office, accumulating $17.2 million from 76 international markets for a total of $103 million overseas and $329.7 million worldwide in its third weekend. The film maintained strong holds in multiple countries, including a 37% drop in Mexico, where it has amassed $15.1 million to date.

Universal/Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil added four more markets, achieving $7.3 million this weekend and reaching a cumulative total of $20.9 million overseas, with a global box office of $42.4 million.

As the landscape of animated films continues to evolve, industry experts are watching closely to see how Transformers One performs in the coming weeks.
