Emerald Fennell, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker, is generating significant buzz with her upcoming adaptation of “Wuthering Heights,” as Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi have officially joined the cast. Robbie, an Academy Award nominee, will portray the iconic character Catherine Earnshaw, while BAFTA nominee Elordi will take on the role of Heathcliff.
Production for the highly anticipated film will be spearheaded by MRC in collaboration with LuckyChap, a company co-founded by Robbie. Fennell, who will write, direct, and produce the film, has previously partnered with LuckyChap on successful projects including the Oscar-winning “Promising Young Woman” and the recent film “Saltburn.” Fennell also featured in the billion-dollar-grossing “Barbie,” which Robbie produced and starred in.
Currently in pre-production, “Wuthering Heights” is scheduled to begin shooting in the U.K. in 2025. Fennell announced her adaptation plans on social media in July, sharing a graphic featuring a notable quote from Emily Brontë’s classic novel: “Be with me always – Take any form – Drive me mad.” The announcement indicated a collaboration with MRC, the studio that backed “Saltburn.”
With Robbie and Elordi’s casting, many key figures from “Saltburn” are reuniting for this new project. Barry Keoghan, who starred in “Saltburn,” has expressed interest in joining the cast, stating, “Anything that Emerald puts her hands on, I’m there. She’s incredible.”
Robbie has consistently praised Fennell’s distinct storytelling abilities. Reflecting on their collaboration, she remarked, “Emerald immerses you into a world so quickly. She’s masterful at tone and plot.” Robbie noted that Fennell’s work compels audiences to engage with the story on a deeper level, sparking conversation long after viewing.
Fans have eagerly anticipated Robbie’s on-screen collaboration with Fennell, especially following Carey Mulligan’s Oscar-nominated performance in “Promising Young Woman.” While Robbie had to step aside for that role, her participation in “Wuthering Heights” signals a long-awaited partnership between the actress and director.
Robbie is set to appear next in Kogonada’s “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” scheduled for release in May 2025. LuckyChap’s recent projects include the theatrical release of “My Old Ass” and the off-Broadway play “The Big Gay Jamboree.” Elordi, fresh off his breakout year with roles in “Saltburn” and Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” will next star in “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” and Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein.”
Robbie is represented by Entertainment 360, CAA, Aran Michael Management, attorney Jeff Bernstein, and Narrative. Elordi is represented by Gersh, while Fennell is represented by UTA and Entertainment 360.
