Freddie Prinze Jr. is set to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel to the 1997 horror classic “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Originally starring alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe, Prinze’s involvement adds a nostalgic touch to the project.
Jennifer Love Hewitt is currently in discussions to return, although her contract has yet to be finalized. Prinze will share the screen with a new generation of actors, including Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King. Notably, Camila Mendes, known for her role in “Riverdale,” has departed from the film due to scheduling conflicts.
While the specifics of the sequel’s plot remain under wraps, the original film centers on four teenagers from a small coastal town who are haunted by a hook-wielding killer a year after they conceal a fatal car accident. The original movie was a commercial success, grossing $125 million worldwide, and spawned a sequel, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” in 1998, as well as a direct-to-video reboot titled “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” Additionally, Amazon Prime has adapted the story into a television series.
Reflecting on his experience with the first film, Prinze revealed that he nearly walked away from the project due to difficulties with director Jim Gillespie. He described Gillespie as difficult to work with, noting that there was tension stemming from the director’s initial desire to cast another actor, Jeremy Sisto, in his role. On his podcast, “That Was Pretty Scary,” Prinze expressed his gratitude for the challenges he faced on set, stating, “It was a struggle to finish work every day. However, it prepared me for this business in a way.”
The sequel will be directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, recognized for her work on Netflix comedies such as “Do Revenge” and “Someone Great.” Robinson co-wrote the script with Sam Lansky, based on a draft by Leah McKendrick. Neal Moritz returns as a producer for the franchise.
Sony Pictures is scheduled to release the film in theaters on July 18, 2025.
