A new “Rugrats” live-action/CG hybrid movie is in development at Paramount, bringing the beloved ’90s animated series back to the big screen. Fans of Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, Phil and Lil DeVille, and their adventurous baby crew will see these iconic characters reimagined in a mix of live-action and CGI, similar to the style of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie.
The film will feature CGI-rendered babies while placing them in a real-world setting. Though it’s not confirmed which characters from the original series will be included, major players like Angelica Pickles, Dil Pickles, dog Spike, and their colorful group of parents could make appearances.
Jason Moore, known for directing hits like “Pitch Perfect” and the comedy “Sisters”, will helm the project. The script has been written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell of “Saturday Night Live” fame. Producers include Karen Rosenfelt, along with “Rugrats” co-creators Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó, ensuring that the spirit of the original series remains intact.
The “Rugrats” series originally premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991 and became a massive cultural phenomenon, spawning multiple theatrical films like “The Rugrats Movie” (1998), “Rugrats in Paris” (2000), and “Rugrats Go Wild” (2003), which crossed over with “The Wild Thornberrys”. Additionally, the franchise expanded into the spinoff series “All Grown Up!”, and a reboot launched on Paramount+ in 2021.
With a talented director at the helm and fan-favorite characters returning to the big screen, this new “Rugrats” movie is set to appeal to both nostalgic fans of the original series and a new generation of viewers.
