BTS’ RM: Right People, Wrong Place Premieres at Busan Film Festival

by Barbara

The documentary RM: Right People, Wrong Place made its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), with members of the creative team presenting the film onstage in front of a captivated audience. Notably absent was RM, the film’s subject and leader of BTS, who is currently fulfilling his mandatory military service.

Director Lee Seok-jun opened the presentation by recalling a memorable encounter with RM, who shared a Korean saying: “Every meeting must part, and every parting leads to another meeting.” This phrase encapsulates the film’s exploration of relationships, emphasizing that every encounter inevitably leads to farewells, but also to new beginnings.

Joining Director Lee onstage were other key members of the documentary’s creative team, including San Yawn, Im Subin, Jang Sehoon, and JNKYRD. They introduced the film to the audience at the Busan Cinema Center’s 4,000-seat BIFF Theater on a rainy day, generating a warm reception.

“This documentary captures RM’s journey during the creation of his album Right Place, Wrong Person, while also offering an honest portrayal of his personal emotions and doubts,” Lee stated. “It showcases the collaborative process with various artists and creators, allowing audiences to engage deeply with the album’s development.”

RM: Right People, Wrong Place follows the recording process of RM’s second album, which was released in May 2024. Lee is also known for his work on BTS bandmate J-hope’s music videos for “Arson” and “MORE.”

RM, whose full name is Kim Nam-joon, enlisted for military service in December 2023 and is expected to complete his duties in June 2025.

Reflecting on the film’s production, Lee shared, “This project took nine months to complete, which might seem short, but it was an extensive process for me. It dives deep into RM’s inner self while expressing emotions that resonate with many people’s life experiences.”

The film has been officially invited to BIFF’s “Open Cinema” section and is slated for a global theatrical release later this year. CJ 4DPLEX, in collaboration with BTS’s label HYBE, announced the screening and subsequent release.

“After watching the film, I hope you enjoy meaningful conversations with your friends about what you see,” Lee concluded, encouraging audiences to engage with the documentary’s themes.
