by Barbara

In response to the increasing demand for Indonesian horror films, U.S.-Thai film sales company EST N8 has acquired the rights to “Perewangan,” which is set to premiere in theaters in Indonesia later this month.

The film centers on characters Maya and Wulan, who grapple with supernatural forces as their once-thriving family business collapses. They must confront a terrifying figure that is believed to be responsible for their misfortunes.

“Perewangan” is both written and directed by Awi Suryadi, acclaimed for his work on “KKN Di Desa Penari,” the highest-grossing Indonesian film to date, as well as the “Danur” franchise. The film’s cast features Davina Karamoy, Restu Triandy, and popular musician Shanty.

Produced by MD Pictures, a subsidiary of MD Entertainment, “Perewangan” is part of the extensive film and television empire led by Manoj Punjabi, which has released over 190 films, including the successful “KKN Di Desa Penari.”

In addition to “Perewangan,” EST N8’s slate for the Busan market includes several intriguing projects: the time-loop thriller “30 Minutes,” directed by Kongkiat Komesiri; the acclaimed Korean action film “Mash Ville,” which won the Fantasia Best Director Award; the horror thriller “Chabak,” a Netflix Korea hit produced by the renowned Tiger Yeongseop Kim; and the Nepalese historical drama “Gurkha Warrior.”

Established by Jaeson Ma and Eric Tu in 2022, EST N8 represents Asian content across various genres and aims to produce and finance an annual slate of 15 projects. The Thailand-based N8, founded by Kris Eiamsakulrat and Rachel Wu, formed a partnership last year with leading Thai studio GDH559 to co-produce a series of Thai thriller and horror films targeting a global audience.

Jaeson Ma, chairman of EST Studios, remarked, “The collaboration with MD Entertainment on ‘Perewangan’ marks an exciting chapter in horror cinema. We are dedicated to bringing innovative and captivating stories to life, and Awi Suryadi’s exceptional talent is sure to elevate this project to new heights.”
