Henry Cavill, known for his roles as Superman and Geralt of Rivia, is set to embark on a new franchise as he joins the cast of Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming live-action adaptation of Voltron. This announcement marks a significant shift for Cavill, who has recently concluded his portrayals of iconic characters.
Cavill is the second cast member confirmed for the film, following the casting of Daniel Quinn-Toye. Quinn-Toye, relatively new to the scene, garnered attention for his performance as Tom Holland’s understudy in a West End production of Romeo and Juliet.
While specifics about Cavill’s character remain undisclosed, industry speculation suggests he may portray Keith Kogane. In the original Voltron narrative, Kogane leads a team of five space explorers sent by the Galaxy Alliance to the planet Arus. Upon their arrival, they uncover the lost robot lions, which allow them to merge and form Voltron, a powerful force opposing King Zarkon and his Drule empire. Voltron is depicted as the universe’s sole defense against Zarkon’s monstrous robeasts and his ambitions to conquer Arus.
The original Voltron series, which debuted in 1984, was a reworked version of the 1981 anime Beast King GoLion. The second season introduced Vehicle Voltron, derived from the unrelated anime Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV. Due to Voltron’s popularity in the U.S., additional episodes featuring the Lion Force Voltron were produced, culminating in a crossover special that integrated both series.
In 2016, DreamWorks Animation rebooted the franchise with the animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender, which ran for 78 episodes on Netflix. It remains uncertain whether the forthcoming feature film will incorporate elements from this latest iteration.
Voltron will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ellen Shanman. As of now, the film does not have a confirmed release date.
