In an unexpected transformation, Jude Law portrays a beleaguered FBI agent in the gripping historical crime thriller “The Order.” Set against the backdrop of the 1980s, the film features the British actor donning a striking hairline and a mustache as he investigates a neo-Nazi group. A new trailer for the film was released on Thursday.
“The Order” is based on true events, highlighting a troubling rise in violent bombings and bank robberies in the Pacific Northwest. The narrative follows a weary FBI agent who finds himself in a perilous game of cat and mouse with a charismatic domestic terrorist intent on overthrowing the U.S. government. Nicholas Hoult, an Emmy nominee, stars as Bob Mathews, the founder of the titular white supremacist group responsible for a series of harrowing crimes between 1983 and 1984. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, Odessa Young, Alison Oliver, and Marc Maron.
Directed by Justin Kurzel, known for “Macbeth,” and penned by Academy Award nominee Zach Baylin, who wrote “King Richard,” “The Order” draws its inspiration from the 1989 nonfiction book “The Silent Brotherhood” by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in August, where it competed for the prestigious Golden Lion and currently holds an impressive 86% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
During a press conference at the festival, Law remarked on the film’s alarming relevance to contemporary American politics, stating, “It felt like a piece of work that needed to be made now.” He noted, “I think we live at a time now that was reflected in the film, where there is division, and there’s a lot of conversation about the future and about ideologies.”
Kurzel echoed Law’s sentiments, describing the film as a reflection of a dangerous ideology that can quickly take root. He added, “I think that’s a timeless thing, not only in America, but in Australia too,” highlighting the universal themes addressed in the film.
“The Order” is set to hit theaters on December 6.
