Following the success of his recent film “Longlegs,” writer-director Osgood Perkins is set to return with another chilling supernatural horror movie. On Tuesday, Neon unveiled the eerie and offbeat trailer for “The Monkey,” which is scheduled to hit theaters on February 21, 2025.
The trailer, which features a blend of dark humor and unsettling imagery, notably includes the disturbing sight of a baby carriage engulfed in flames. “The Monkey” is an adaptation of a 1980 short story by Stephen King, part of his acclaimed collection “Skeleton Crew.” The narrative centers on twin brothers Hal and Bill, who stumble upon a sinister old monkey toy in their attic. As inexplicable and gruesome deaths begin to unfold, the brothers decide to dispose of the toy. Over the years, they drift apart but are eventually reunited when the monkey resurfaces.
The film showcases a talented cast, with Christian Convery (“Sweet Tooth”) portraying the young Hal and Bill, while Emmy nominee Theo James (“The White Lotus,” “The Gentlemen”) plays the adult version of one of the brothers. The ensemble also features Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany (“She-Hulk,” “Orphan Black”), Elijah Wood (“The Lord of the Rings”), Laura Mennell (“Batwoman”), Sarah Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Rohan Campbell (“The Hardy Boys”), Colin O’Brien (“Dear Edward”), and Corin Clark (“Upload”).
Produced by renowned horror filmmaker James Wan (“The Conjuring”) alongside Michael Clear, Dave Caplan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Chris Ferguson, “The Monkey” marks the second partnership between Perkins and Neon, following the success of “Longlegs.” The latter has emerged as Neon’s highest-grossing film to date and the top independent film of 2024, amassing over $100 million at the box office against a modest budget of under $10 million.
If “The Monkey” performs well, it could represent a remarkable back-to-back success in the horror genre, reminiscent of Ari Aster’s acclaimed films “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” which were released a year apart in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
As anticipation builds for its release, “The Monkey” promises to be a notable entry in the horror landscape, continuing Perkins’s intriguing exploration of supernatural themes.
