Renowned filmmaker Ridley Scott recently opened up about his decision to turn down the opportunity to direct “Top Gun: Maverick”. This revelation has sparked interest among movie enthusiasts and industry insiders alike.
Ridley Scott’s late brother, Tony Scott, directed the first “Top Gun” movie back in 1986. Tony Scott’s work on the original film left an indelible mark on cinematic history. However, in 2012, Tony Scott tragically committed suicide. Decades later, when the opportunity for a sequel arose, Joseph Kosinski was chosen to direct “Top Gun: Maverick”. The film saw the return of Tom Cruise’s iconic character Pete Mitchell and was met with outstanding reviews and worldwide acclaim.
In an interview, Ridley Scott explained that he chose not to direct the sequel because he didn’t want to follow in his brother’s footsteps. He elaborated on the different genres they typically worked in, stating that a lot of his own work is either historic, fantasy, or science fiction, while Tony was always more interested in contemporary stories. Ridley Scott mentioned specific films like “Alien”, “Blade Runner”, and “Legend” to illustrate the contrast in their styles.
Although Ridley Scott’s decision to decline the offer may have initially raised questions, it ultimately didn’t pose a problem for the makers of “Top Gun: Maverick”. The film went on to break box office records and received an incredible score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was even nominated for Best Picture. However, it’s undeniable that the movie would likely have been very different had Ridley Scott been at the helm.
Paramount Pictures is currently developing “Top Gun 3”, which currently doesn’t have a release date. While the future of the franchise remains uncertain, one thing is clear: Ridley Scott’s decision to step aside shows his respect for his brother’s work and his desire to let Tony Scott’s legacy in the “Top Gun” franchise stand on its own.
