‘Avatar: Fire & Ash’ Reveals New Tribes

by Barbara Miller

The highly anticipated sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water, titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, has generated significant excitement with the reveal of concept art showcasing the first look at the Fire Tribe. Set to be released on December 19, 2025, this installment is expected to bring back many familiar cast members, including Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, Jack Champion as Spider, and Stephen Lang as Quaritch. Along with these returning favorites, the movie will also introduce the Fire Tribe, offering a deeper exploration of the diverse Na’vi cultures.

The first glimpse of the Fire Tribe was revealed on Twitter by DiscussingFilm from D23 Brazil. The concept art shows a group of Na’vi surrounded by unidentified creatures as they walk through fire. The image is filled with mystery, as it doesn’t fully reveal the behavior of these Na’vi. However, the post features a quote from James Cameron’s presentation at the event, stating that these Na’vi “have a lot of anger and a lot of rage.” Nicknamed the Ash People, they are set to be a central element of the movie. In addition to the Ash People, Cameron will introduce two different tribes in the movie. One is described as “nomadic and travel through the air,” while the other “represents the dark side of the Na’vi.” The fire-based group was “destroyed by volcanic eruptions” and now chooses to “resent nature and everything the forest Na’vi preach.” Disney D23 also revealed several other pieces of concept art, including a Na’vi flying on the back of a creature with a gaping maw and spike-like feathers, a Fire Tribe village in a desert environment filled with sand and large rock formations, air-based Na’vi flying in living hot air balloons, and more. The final image seemingly reveals more of the water-based Metkayina Clan as they greet the underwater tulkun in a massive village-wide meeting on the water.

The introduction of these new tribes in Avatar: Fire and Ash has both positive and negative implications. After the success of Avatar: The Way of Water, which introduced a water-focused tribe, it was inevitable that the franchise would branch out and explore other aspects of Pandora. The Ash People and the nomadic tribe could provide new insights into the ways of the Na’vi that differ from the traditional nature-based lifestyles that have defined the franchise. However, the reported animosity of the Ash People towards nature raises concerns that they may work with the Resources Development Administration (RDA) in an attempt to destroy Pandora’s natural landscapes. This could lead to potential betrayals and conflicts within the story.

Unfortunately, the decision to focus on a fire and air-based tribe has drawn criticism. The similarities between Avatar and the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise are hard to ignore. With three friendly tribes focused on earth, water, and air, and an evil tribe that hates nature and is closely tied to fire, the comparisons are inevitable. Both franchises share similar concepts, especially in terms of the battles between industrialization and natural lifestyles. The fact that they even have the same name makes it even easier for viewers to draw parallels. While it’s understandable that both franchises may have been inspired by mythology, James Cameron should be aware of these similarities and take steps to make Avatar: Fire and Ash more distinct. Leaning too heavily on The Last Airbender concepts is disappointing, and the movie could set itself apart by featuring an evil nomadic tribe in a unique way rather than simply mirroring the concepts of the show. Despite these concerns, it will still be exciting to see more of the Pandora world and how these new tribes fit into the overall story. However, Cameron needs to ensure that Avatar: Fire and Ash stands on its own and doesn’t simply feel like a rehash of another popular franchise.
