The DreamWorks animated movie “The Wild Robot” has achieved a major milestone at the box office.
The movie, based on a children’s book, follows Roz and Brightbill. Despite a middling start, it has become a significant hit.
“The Wild Robot” opened with $35.8 million against a $78 million budget but has steadily risen. As of Saturday morning, it’s projected to close its seventh weekend with $6 million, pushing its domestic total to $130.2 million. It has become the 13th movie of the year to pass the $130 million milestone and climbed to the 97th highest-grossing domestic animated release, passing several titles.
The movie has had a remarkable hold on audiences, with a slim week-on-week drop. If this continues, it could gross more and potentially pass more movies on the chart. Factors contributing to its success include glowing reviews and a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. It’s also a contender for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. Additionally, the release of “Terrifier 3” may have boosted its prospects as underage viewers bought tickets to sneak into the slasher movie.
As holiday movie season approaches, “The Wild Robot” will likely be pushed out by upcoming blockbusters. However, it has solidified itself as a hit for DreamWorks and could potentially spawn a new franchise like “Shrek” or “How to Train Your Dragon.”
