Two movies with Oscar buzz become the first awards season contenders to pass a significant box office milestone. They are making waves in the awards conversation.
On the same weekend, two new movies that are strong contenders for the 2025 Oscars have achieved a major box office milestone. Awards season typically heats up in the fall, with October to December seeing a concentration of movies vying for awards. While many major Best Picture contenders are yet to premiere, some have already hit theaters in fall 2024, including Sean Baker’s “Anora”, Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez”, and the Saoirse Ronan war drama “Blitz”.
“Conclave” and “We Live in Time” have both passed a major domestic milestone. “Conclave” stars Ralph Fiennes as a cardinal who uncovers secrets during the selection of a new pope. “We Live in Time”, a nonlinear romance starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, premiered several weeks earlier. As of Sunday morning, both are projected to pass the $20 million milestone at the domestic box office. “Conclave” is projected to earn $4.1 million in three days, bringing its cumulative total to $21.5 million, while “We Live in Time” with a $2.2 million three-day total reaches $21.8 million.
While they are the first awards season releases to hit this threshold, a few other 2024 titles released before October and with awards buzz have already passed the $20 million mark, like “Challengers”, “The Wild Robot”, and “Dune: Part Two”. “Conclave” has been more prominent in the awards conversation with its high Rotten Tomatoes score and being directed by Edward Berger, who previously directed an Oscar-nominated film. However, the commercial success of “We Live in Time” could boost its Oscar prospects as it performs on the same level as the celebrated “Conclave”.
