A24’s horror movie divides audiences even as it pleases critics. The movie’s success remains in question.
A24, an independent entertainment company known for its offbeat cinema, has released many movies across different genres. Their horror movies are notorious, with some being successful with both critics and audiences. However, others have been criticized for misrepresenting dark dramas as horror.
Heretic, a new horror-thriller starring Hugh Grant, has received mixed responses from audiences despite being loved by critics. It has a Certified Fresh 93% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest among A24 horror movies in 2024. However, its audience response on CinemaScore is a C+, and on Rotten Tomatoes, the aggregated audience score during its debut weekend is 78%, which is more mixed.
Despite the mixed audience reaction, Heretic is still performing well. Its Rotten Tomatoes audience score is above the 60% threshold for being considered Fresh, and its opening weekend gross of more than $10 million is likely enough for it to earn a profit given its budget. So, while it may not have a unanimously positive response, it is hardly suffering.
