“Heretic”, one of the top-rated horror flicks of 2024, has achieved a remarkable feat. Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the creative minds behind “A Quiet Place”, this new A24 horror movie tells the tale of two Mormon missionaries. They set out to convert a reclusive Englishman who turns out to be far more menacing than expected, plunging them into a deadly cat-and-mouse game. The cast, featuring the likes of Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East, Tophher Grace, and Elle Young, has brought this chilling story to life.
After a mere week in theaters, “Heretic” has already surpassed its budget at the box office. It reports that it has reached the $15 million mark globally, exceeding its reported production budget of around $10 million. With $11 million from domestic markets and $4 million internationally, it’s clear the film is making an impact. This milestone means “Heretic” is on track to become a modest box office success. Usually, a movie needs to earn two and a half times its production budget to turn a profit, but this is especially notable given the tough year horror movies have had. In 2024, big studio horror releases like “Imaginary”, “Night Swim”, “The First Omen”, “Abigail”, “The Watchers”, and “Tarot” haven’t fared well domestically, failing to reach the $50 million mark. In contrast, indie horror films such as “Terrifier 3”, “Longlegs”, and “Late Night with the Devil” have done much better.
“Heretic” benefits from positive reviews, especially for Hugh Grant’s against-type performance, along with its cerebral thrills, earning it a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For fans of A24 horror, this quick budget recoup is a great sign, showing that indie horror’s focus on atmosphere and intellectual challenges is paying off, and it’s wonderful to see Grant’s villainous turn get recognized, differing from his usual charming romantic lead image.
