‘Wicked’ Director: Ariana Grande’s Surprise Elphaba Audition

by Barbara Miller

Director Jon M. Chu has revealed a surprising twist in the casting process for the highly anticipated Wicked movie: Ariana Grande originally auditioned for the role of Elphaba, not Glinda, due to a miscommunication.

The Audition Mix-Up

According to Chu, he was under the impression that Grande was auditioning for Glinda. However, his casting director informed him that Grande had actually prepared for Elphaba’s songs. Despite the mix-up, Chu decided to let her audition for Elphaba anyway, believing that she might be better suited for Glinda’s role.

What Could Have Been: Grande as Elphaba

The characters of Elphaba and Glinda are polar opposites. Elphaba, with her green skin, is a misunderstood outcast who faces bullying at Shiz University and leads a rebellion. In contrast, Glinda is popular, glamorous, and more reserved when it comes to supporting radical change. While Grande’s bubbly public persona aligns with Glinda’s cheerful nature, Elphaba’s fiery, determined character would have required a very different approach.

The Right Role for Grande

Looking back, Chu finds the mix-up humorous, acknowledging that Grande ultimately found her place in Wicked as Glinda. Her passion for the character, coupled with her performance, confirms she landed the perfect role, a decision that will undoubtedly delight fans when the film hits theaters.
