Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films’ live-action Masters of the Universe reboot is considering Idris Elba to take on the role of one of He-Man’s crucial allies. This reboot is the second live-action attempt for Mattel’s popular He-Man action figure line, aiming to improve on the much-criticized 1987 movie starring Dolph Lundgren.
After Netflix’s planned movie with Kyle Allen was scrapped in 2023, Amazon MGM Studios stepped in with their version, led by Travis Knight and slated for a June 5, 2026 release. Now, Elba is in the final negotiation stages to join as Duncan, aka Man at Arms. The character was recently voiced by Liam Cunningham in Netflix’s related show and is the foster father of Teela, to be played by Camila Mendes. Other cast announcements include Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam and Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn.
What Elba’s Casting Could Mean
Elba’s presence would bring much-needed star power to the project. The He-Man brand has been popular in toys and animation but has struggled in live-action, with the 1987 movie failing both critically and commercially and previous reboot attempts faltering. However, since Amazon’s involvement, He-Man’s live-action return seems more promising. If Elba joins, it could boost the movie’s credibility even among skeptics, putting the reboot on a stronger footing.
Our Take on Elba’s Role
Elba, a highly talented actor known for commanding and stoic roles, is an exciting choice for the Masters of the Universe reboot. As Duncan, he could be the wise father figure for Teela and Prince Adam, potentially making up for his underutilized role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Heimdall. In the MCU, his character was sidelined over time. Hopefully, if he joins this project, he’ll have a better chance to showcase his skills in a heroic and fantastical story.
