In the highly anticipated Sonic The Hedgehog 3, the stakes are being raised for our titular hero, and along with that, a wild new setting is set to be explored. The third movie in the franchise based on SEGA games will see Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles reluctantly team up with Robotnik. Their mission? To stop Shadow the Hedgehog, who is on a quest for destruction in pursuit of justice for his dark past.
The cast is star-studded, with Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey returning to lead. They’ll be joined by franchise veterans like James Marsden, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Tika Sumpter, and the exciting addition of Keanu Reeves as Shadow.
New Setting Details
Ahead of the November 25 trailer release, The Hollywood Handle received a special care package from Paramount Pictures. Inside was an official plot description for the movie that revealed it will go to space. The description said, “With their abilities outmatched in every way, they seek out an alliance to fight Shadow and protect the planet. From Tokyo to London to the far reaches of space, it’s an incredible adventure that takes it all to the next level.”
What It Means for the Story
The Adventure games seem to be the main source of inspiration. While it’s not clear if the “space” is another planet or just general space, it’s a first for the movie franchise. The first movie hinted at Sonic’s origin from another planet and had Robotnik banished. The second movie saw Knuckles’ travels related to that planet. Sonic The Hedgehog 3’s story appears to draw mostly from the second Adventure game, where Shadow was introduced and there was a plot involving stopping Robotnik from crashing the ARK. Given the role of Robotnik’s grandfather in the film, it’s likely it’s taking cues from that game. However, director Jeff Fowler also mentioned pulling from the 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog game, so the space setting could tie into its events too.
Our Take on the Space Setting
If the movie follows the second Adventure game’s path, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 going to space could show the full power of the Chaos Emeralds. A recent poster teased “chaos is coming”, perhaps hinting at the villain Chaos. Combining the endings of both Adventure games for the movie’s finale could be a thrilling conclusion for fans.
