Equalizer S5: Star’s Real Reason for Character’s Cast in Ep 5

by Barbara Miller

CBS’s popular series The Equalizer has encountered an unexpected twist that directly impacts its storyline, following a real-life incident involving actor Adam Goldberg. While Season 5 continues without major disruptions, and confirmation for a Season 6 remains pending, the show has become a mainstay for CBS, with talks of a potential spin-off due to the growing popularity of Robyn’s team. In just four years, The Equalizer has completed five seasons, underscoring CBS’s strong reliance on its success.

However, the show’s progress has been affected by Goldberg’s recent injury. In a candid interview, Goldberg, who plays Harry, revealed that a motorcycle accident left him with a broken wrist, leading to multiple surgeries. As a result, Harry’s character appears in a cast during the next two episodes of Season 5, specifically in episodes 5 and 6. While the show has written the injury into the storyline as carpal tunnel surgery, Goldberg’s real-life accident was the cause of his discomfort.

“I broke my wrist in a motorcycle accident a year ago and had to get a second surgery this year because it didn’t heal properly,” Goldberg shared. “I reached out to [showrunner Joseph C. Wilson] and asked when I could get the surgery. He said, ‘After 5×04.’ I had the surgery right after we wrapped that episode, and for the next two episodes, you’ll see me in a cast.”

Impact on the Show’s Storyline: A Temporary Setback for Harry

Harry’s role as the team’s hacker requires significant physical activity, which would ordinarily pose challenges with a cast. The explanation of carpal tunnel surgery provides a reasonable cover for the cast, but it’s likely to impact his work in the upcoming episodes. Fortunately, Goldberg clarified that the cast will only appear for two episodes, minimizing its impact on the overall plot.

Goldberg’s Commitment to His Role Despite Injury

In addition to his work on The Equalizer, Goldberg’s acting career spans multiple projects, including roles in Once Upon a Time in Venice (2017), The Exorcism (2024), and the Taken TV series. The actor’s commitment to his craft is evident, particularly when considering his real-life injury. Despite his broken wrist, Goldberg went above and beyond for his role, even attempting to play guitar for an undercover mission scene. He pre-recorded the music while enduring significant pain, demonstrating his dedication to delivering an authentic performance.

A Clever Plot Adjustment

The show’s use of carpal tunnel surgery as an explanation for Goldberg’s injury was a smart narrative decision. Integrating this detail further into the storyline could add an intriguing layer, especially with Harry’s growing prominence in Season 5. As the ensemble cast plays a crucial role in the show’s success, focusing on the team’s dynamics could alleviate some of the pressure on Queen Latifah’s lead role. This clever narrative approach ensured that Goldberg’s injury did not become a disruptive element but instead felt like a natural progression within the series.
