The stars of the highly anticipated 2025 Wolf Man reboot are speaking out about their initial reactions to the revamped design of the iconic creature. Directed by Leigh Whannell, known for his work on Saw and The Invisible Man, the film reimagines the classic 1941 horror tale, with Christopher Abbott stepping into the role of a father cursed after a violent home invasion.
In this modern retelling, Abbott’s character, after relocating his family to his childhood home, becomes the target of a monstrous attacker. Left injured, he soon discovers he has been cursed, beginning a horrifying transformation into the creature that has haunted cinema for decades.
Speaking about the reimagined Wolf Man, Abbott and co-star Julia Garner opened up about their reactions to the terrifying new look of the creature. While Garner had seen early photos of the design, she admitted that nothing could have prepared her for the full impact of seeing the monster in person on set. “I saw some photos beforehand, but seeing it in real life is a totally different experience,” she said. “It was really shocking and actually really scary, and I felt a little awkward because I couldn’t stop studying his face.”
Abbott also shared insights into the creature’s evolution, revealing that the film would showcase multiple stages of the transformation. This process required him to spend anywhere from two to seven hours in the makeup chair. Despite the lengthy sessions, Abbott praised the realism of the design, noting how the tactile qualities of the creature enhanced the overall sense of dread. “What I loved is that I thought it looked scary but there was also something very real and tactile about it,” he said.
The mystery surrounding the creature’s final look continues to fuel excitement for the film. While promotional material has kept Abbott’s transformed character mostly in shadow or hidden from view, it’s clear that the gradual transformation will play a key role in amplifying the horror. Abbott’s comments suggest that the transformation, which occurs over multiple encounters, will be integral to the emotional impact of the story, especially as it affects his relationship with his family.
Though fans have yet to see the full design of the Wolf Man, the careful concealment of the creature in the marketing could enhance the movie’s surprise factor when it premieres in January. Given Whannell’s success in reinventing The Invisible Man with a fresh, terrifying approach, audiences are eagerly anticipating how the director will modernize the werewolf myth. With the transformation playing a pivotal role in the narrative, Wolf Man is poised to offer not just a visual spectacle, but an emotional experience that will haunt viewers long after the credits roll.
