The Forge has released the official U.S. trailer for Sujo, a poignant Mexican drama that delves into the tumultuous life of a young man trapped by violence and fate. Directed by the acclaimed duo Astrid Rondero (The Darkest Days of Us) and Fernanda Valadez (Identifying Features), Sujo explores themes of legacy, survival, and the inescapable influence of one’s past.
Premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the film has since been showcased at various prestigious events, including the Miami, Seattle, Munich, London, and San Sebastian festivals. The story begins with the death of a cartel gunman, leaving his young son, Sujo, orphaned and vulnerable to the same dangers that claimed his father’s life. Raised by his aunt in a rural, isolated setting, Sujo grows up surrounded by poverty and the constant threat of violence.
As a teenager, he becomes rebellious and, as a rite of passage, joins the local cartel. But even as he matures and attempts to escape the brutal cycle of his upbringing, Sujo finds that his father’s criminal legacy may be an inescapable burden. The film poignantly examines his struggle with destiny and the weight of familial ties.
Sujo stars Juan Jesús Varela, Yadira Pérez, Alexis Varela, Jairo Hernández, Sandra Lorenzano, Kevin Aguilar, and Karla Garrido. Critics have lauded the film for its “gentle approach to a harsh world,” highlighting its patience and sensitivity in telling a uniquely compelling story.
Produced by Rondero, Valadez, Diana Arcega, Jewerl Keats Ross, Virginie Devesa, and Jean-Baptiste Bailly-Maitre, Sujo opens in U.S. theaters on December 6, 2024. With its emotional depth and powerful narrative, Sujo is poised to be a must-see for fans of compelling international cinema.
