Hollywood icon Julia Roberts has turned down the opportunity to reprise her role in a potential sequel to Notting Hill, one of her most beloved films from the 1990s. Despite a long and successful career, Roberts has opted not to move forward with the project, quashing any hopes of a return to the romantic comedy that made her a global star.
Released in May 1999, Notting Hill, co-starring Hugh Grant, became a massive success, grossing $363 million worldwide. Directed by Roger Michell and written by Richard Curtis, the film is cherished for its witty script, charming performances, and quintessential British humor. Roberts’ portrayal of Anna Scott, a famous actress who falls in love with a humble bookshop owner, made her a household name, further cementing her status after her breakout role in Pretty Woman.
Although Notting Hill never received a sequel, Curtis recently revealed that an idea was pitched for one. The proposed storyline featured Roberts’ character, Anna, and Grant’s Will, facing a divorce. However, Roberts was unimpressed by the concept, calling it a “very poor idea.” Curtis, who is known for his work on other hit romantic comedies such as Love Actually, said that without Roberts’ approval, the project couldn’t move forward.
With over $3.9 billion in box office earnings across her career, Roberts is no stranger to sequels, having starred in the Ocean’s Eleven franchise and more. While the idea of a Notting Hill follow-up might have sparked curiosity, Roberts’ rejection puts an end to any hopes of extending the film’s legacy.
In the unpredictable world of Hollywood, sequels to decades-old classics have occasionally thrived—Top Gun: Maverick being a notable example. However, it seems the dream of revisiting Anna and Will’s love story is unlikely to come true anytime soon.
