Matangi: A New Villain Set to Shake Up Moana 2 with a Mysterious Past

by Barbara Miller

The highly anticipated sequel to Moana is set to introduce a thrilling new villain: Matangi. With a mysterious history tied to Maui, this enigmatic character promises to bring new challenges and complexities to the beloved adventure.

A Complex New Dynamic

In an exclusive interview, the co-directors of Moana 2, David G. Derrick, Dana Ledoux Miller, and Jason Hand, opened up about the intriguing relationship between Matangi and Maui. Describing their connection as “open to interpretation,” Derrick teased that there’s a history between the characters, while Hand hinted at a longstanding dynamic that’s “very fun, very playful.” Miller remained tight-lipped on whether Matangi harbors a romantic interest in Maui, though she did mention Matangi had spent considerable time trapped in a cave.

Dwayne Johnson, the voice behind Maui, weighed in with his own take. Recalling Matangi’s line, “Maui was looking pretty good,” Johnson shared a humorous moment from the premiere, where his 6-year-old questioned whether Matangi had a crush on Maui. Johnson playfully agreed, quipping, “They all have a crush on Maui.”

A New Type of Villain

Matangi’s arrival marks a shift in the type of villain Disney fans can expect. Unlike straightforward antagonists of the past, Matangi’s motives are ambiguous, making her a more complex adversary. Auli’i Cravalho, who voices Moana, hinted that Matangi will challenge Moana in ways that go beyond simply defeating a villain, forcing her to navigate the complexities of Matangi’s unclear allegiance.

A Richer, More Nuanced Plot

The exploration of Matangi’s connection with Maui promises to add depth to the film’s plot. While their playful interactions provide a fun backdrop, the film will delve into Matangi’s motivations and mysterious past, particularly in her musical number “Get Lost.” Her role promises to bring fresh themes of trust, rivalry, and the complexities of relationships to the forefront.

What We Can Expect

Compared to the first film’s villain, Te Ka, Matangi offers a far more unpredictable challenge for Moana. With her playful rivalry with Maui and possible romantic undertones, she deepens the character dynamics and heightens the stakes. With new music from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Moana 2 is shaping up to be an exciting and multi-layered sequel that will captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
