Twelve years after his role in the Twilight franchise, Chaske Spencer has confirmed that he won’t be reprising his character in Netflix’s upcoming animated series. Despite the franchise’s struggles to expand over the years, Netflix’s September 2024 announcement of an animated adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s bestselling Twilight novels, centered on Midnight Sun from Edward Cullen’s perspective, has reignited interest in the saga.
Spencer’s Decision to Step Away
Spencer, who portrayed Sam Uley, leader of the La Push pack, expressed his surprise upon learning of the animated adaptation. During an interview, he revealed that he feels “too old for Sam” and suggested that a younger, more fit actor might be a better fit for the voice role.
What His Absence Means for the Series
While Sam is not as central to the storyline as characters like Edward, Bella, and Jacob, his role in the Twilight TV series will depend on how faithfully it follows Meyer’s novels. In the books, Sam plays a pivotal role in Bella’s discovery of the Cullen family’s vampire secret. However, since Midnight Sun offers a new perspective on the story, it’s possible that Sam may not feature prominently. Spencer’s absence isn’t without precedent—Sam was initially portrayed by Solomon Trimble before Spencer took over.
Creative Decisions for the Show
The Twilight creative team faces a decision on whether to bring back any of the original movie cast members. Many of the franchise’s stars have distanced themselves from the series, and with the show likely rebooting the saga, the team may prefer fresh faces willing to commit for multiple seasons.
Spencer’s Busy Schedule
While Twilight marked a major milestone in Spencer’s career, he has continued to find success in other projects. He recently appeared in Peacock’s Teacup season 1, is set to return as Maya’s uncle in Marvel’s Echo, and will star in the upcoming Wind River sequel. With these projects on the horizon, Spencer has plenty to focus on without revisiting his role in the Twilight universe.
